Scripps Cancer Center oncology specialists combine proven medical expertise with advanced technology and research to detect, diagnose and treat nearly every type of cancer, from very common to extremely rare. Many of our oncologists specialize in a specific cancer type, bringing their singular expertise to patient care. 


The delivery of high-quality cancer care continues to become more complex and requires a portfolio of resources and expertise. With an emphasis on multidisciplinary patient-centric care, the Scripps Cancer Center program and its providers continue to sub-specialize. New approaches to treating specific cancer types are fueling an expansion of services. Scripps physicians use advanced treatment options including minimally invasive robotic surgery, precise radiation therapy technologies and targeted therapies. 

Multidisciplinary expertise and collaborative care

Cancer care is most effective when experts from across disciplines come together to share their expertise. Our multidisciplinary treatment approach unites medical oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists to collaboratively develop a diagnosis and treatment plan for each patient. Our specialists come together to review treatment plans, sharing their collective knowledge and expertise to ensure patients receive the best possible care from diagnosis to recovery.

Nurse navigators

Because living with cancer involves much more than medical treatment, our team also includes nurse navigators — specialty-trained oncology nurse experts who will guide you throughout your care. Intake nurse navigators explain treatment plans, answer questions, help to schedule appointments and procedures, serve as liaisons and offer understanding support when patients need a hand to hold. Our treatment nurse navigators carry this same personal touch through cancer treatment. 


Your personal cancer care team may include other specialists from pathology, laboratory and diagnostic imaging, research and other clinical and support services — all helping to coordinate personalized care. 

Research and clinical trials

Research is the backbone of eradicating cancer. Scripps has long been actively involved in leading-edge clinical and translational research, bringing new treatments from the research bench to the patient’s bedside. We are continually expanding our cancer clinical trial opportunities for patients.

Early detection and diagnosis

Premier Plan members have access to numerous preventive screening exams to detect cancer in its earliest stages. Mammograms, colonoscopies, cervical exams, prostate exams and skin cancer screenings are available at Scripps locations across San Diego County, and several screenings are also provided at the Qualcomm Health Center. 


The best treatment for cancer starts with the most precise diagnosis. Scripps Cancer Center physicians use the latest technology to accurately diagnose each patient’s cancer type and if it may have metastasized. Our diagnostic tools include blood and other laboratory tests, biopsies and advanced imaging exams such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scans, positron emission tomography (PET) scans and more.

Galleri multi-cancer early detection test

Qualcomm is partnering with GRAIL (PDF, 690 KB) to offer eligible employees and their spouse/domestic partner enrolled in the Premier QDHP or Premier PPO plans the Galleri multi-cancer early detection test covered at 100%. Through a simple blood draw, the Galleri test detects a shared cancer signal across more than 50 types of cancer.


Who is eligible? 

Qualcomm employees and their spouse/domestic partner enrolled in a Premier Plan who are aged 50 years or older or age 35-49 with specific risk factors, and their primary care provider is an authorized prescriber based on the testing locations below. Members who meet the eligibility requirements can repeat the test after 365 days. Learn more about the risk factors for eligibility. 


Testing locations

Galleri testing is available for members who meet eligibility requirements (age 50+ or age 35-49 with specific risk factors) and have a primary care provider with Scripps Clinic, Scripps Coastal or the Qualcomm Health Center.


Eligible members can either schedule directly with the Qualcomm Health Center or request testing through Scripps Clinic or Scripps Coastal providers by contacting the Premier Plan Concierge at 844-884-7266.

Personalized treatment options

With diagnosis in hand, our multidisciplinary, collaborative team of cancer specialists develops a personalized treatment plan for every patient in our care. Whether we recommend a single type of treatment or a combination of approaches, Scripps Cancer Center offers some of the most advanced therapies and techniques. We provide a full range of cancer treatments:

Surgery 

Our highly skilled and experienced surgeons treat specific cancer types, ensuring that your patient receives the most specialized care available. Scripps Cancer Center surgical teams operate in our state-of-the-art surgical suites using the most effective techniques, including minimally invasive laparoscopic and robot-assisted procedures whenever possible.  


Chemotherapy, endocrine therapy and infusion therapy 

Scripps Cancer Center chemotherapy, endocrine therapy and infusion therapy treatments target cancer with drugs given orally or intravenously. We provide these services at our hospitals and infusion centers, where we make every effort to ensure our patients are comfortable during treatment. Our infusion centers feature soothing environments, caring staff and therapies to minimize side effects such as nausea and hair loss.


Immunotherapy and targeted therapies

Targeted immunotherapy uses the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer cells. Scripps Cancer Center oncologists employ the most advanced, evidence-based therapies available, often working with your patient’s genetic profile to identify the most individualized treatment.


Radiation therapy 

Scripps Cancer Center offers leading-edge internal and external radiation therapy methods to precisely target tumors while protecting surrounding healthy tissues.


  • 3D-CRT uses advanced computer software that allows physicians to visualize a patient’s anatomy in 3D, thereby more closely matching the radiation dose to the shape of the tumor. 
  • IGRT accounts for patient motion and tumor movement during treatment, such as with lung cancer. 
  • IMRT enables us to specify the strength of the radiation beam to certain areas, allowing for stronger doses to some areas of the tumor. 
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) delivers a single high dose of radiation to an extremely precise location.
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy/stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SBRT/SABR) treats tumors with multiple high-dose radiation treatments (typically two to five).
  • Theranostics, in nuclear medicine, involves a pharmaceutical drug given intravenously that binds to specific target receptors on cancer cells. A radioactive element delivers therapeutic radiation directly to cancer cells. By traveling through the bloodstream, it targets multiple sites of metastatic disease simultaneously.


Interventional oncology

Our interventional radiologists destroy tumors by combining image-guided technology with heat, cold or other methods in this minimally invasive treatment.

Scripps Cancer Center offers a full range of physical, psychological and emotional support services, along with resources for handling the practical aspects of cancer care. Our services and resources include:

Support groups and events 

We offer cancer support groups, free workshops and health and wellness events for our patients, survivors, their family members and the community. 


Nutrition services 

When cancer treatments affect our patients’ appetite or weight, our registered dietitians will provide support for healthy nutrition and weight maintenance. 


Physical, occupational and speech therapy 

To help patients regain strength and return to their usual activities after treatment, we offer physical rehabilitation and occupational therapy services including wound care, voice therapy and swallowing therapy, lymphedema therapy, balance and vestibular rehabilitation, yoga and more. 


Home health care 

Following treatment in the hospital, we help patients continue to recover in the comfort of their homes with skilled intermittent home health care services. 


Palliative care 

Our integrated palliative care provides an extra layer of support by helping patients manage pain and other symptoms, offering emotional support and more. 


Social workers 

Our specially trained oncology social workers provide counseling, connect patients with community and medical resources, assist with transportation and housing and coordinate care after hospital discharge. 


Spiritual care 

Scripps chaplains offer nondenominational spiritual care and help coordinate faith-based care with a patient’s own clergy, rabbi or spiritual advisor. 


Financial services 

Our financial services team is ready to help with questions about insurance coverage, billing and financial assistance.
